LoL good thing i'm broke and have a couple motorcycle track days/racing on my mind before the end of summer. Been eyeing the STI seats/steering wheel
but besides that there isn't a whole lot planned for this car (well other then full exhaust, short throw shifter, some bushings lol and i've had the car for all of a day).thanks |

Yup. Your rear is a viscous diff. If you want a LSD you would find one from the right year and drive ratio. Will post chart when I get home. It is a fast in and out on a hoist. D

much obliged, there's a bunch of information that's only listed for the wrx and i cant find anything that lists some of the specs for the base model.
curious as to what the front back split is for power transfer, wrx says 60/40 rear. I also have to do a little more research to understand how the front drive wheels work. Is there no differential in there or am i just missing something obvious? |

OH SNAP!
The site I typically go to that has a chart of all the gear ratios and what years are LSD and what aren't is now offline. There are only a couple cars that have true LSD rear ends. After 02 all the diffs on the impreza went open. As for your front... you do have a front diff as well. It is inside the tranny. On your car the split is 60/40 D.

Bingo! That is the chart I was looking for.
You will notice the last column. VLSD Yes or No That stands for Viscous LSD. You are trying to find one that has a YES in the last column that matches your car. Looking at the list you may be stuck with what you have. I happen to have an Automatic and I put a rear diff from a 2001 RS MT. It made a nice difference that I can feel in the wintertime. Looks like you however are not going to be able to upgrade yours unless something else out there has a 3.90 rear end that has a VLSD. You will also notice that it lists 2002-2003 WRX with the VLSD. That was the only year they went into the WRX... all WRX models have the non VLSD now. (or so I am told by the dealership mechanics I talk to) D.

Friendly Foe, since you seem like a gearhead and obviously want to learn more about your car, can I suggest that you download the subaru maintenance manual for it. There's also some pretty interesting sections (at least in mine) the describe in detail how the awd and diffs work.
